Heather Berry & Tony serve up parlor music

What a hoot that must have been for the Halls to come up with some new lyrics and melodies that sound like they came right out of the Bristol Sessions. Any CD is only as good as its songs, and the Halls really wrote some dandies for Heather Berry & Tony’s “Before Bluegrass.” This is your basic, three-chord compositions and many sound like they could be found in the Carter Family songbook. One, “Hound Dog Blues,” is a faithful clone of Jimmy Rodgers’ classic blue yodels.

Since this is “Before Bluegrass,” you would be correct in assuming that Scruggs-style banjo is not heard on this CD. Instead, there’s a lot of tastefully done clawhammer style that Mabe plays on on several tracks. Both Berry and Mabe also play the autoharp. [Read More]

LORRAINE JORDAN & CAROLINA ROAD
A Stop In South Port Towne
Blue Circle Records
BY ROBERT STEELMAN

A Stop In South Port Towne is another fine release from the NC.-based Carolina Road. You will notice differences from the band’s previous release most notably personnel changes. Lorraine Jordan has once again managed to assemble excellent musicians. Mandolinist Jordan joins David Guthrie on guitar, Benny Greene on banjo, and Josh Goforth on fiddle. Tim Hall and special guest Zack McLamb share bass duties. Jordan and Guthrie showcase their songwriting talents, penning nearly half of the 12 cuts. A Beautiful River of Life is another wonderful composition from Tom T. and Dixie Hall. BMP

HEATHER BERRY
To A Dove
Blue Circle Records
BY GRACIE MULDOON

Heather Berry is a young lady on a mission - a mission to bring a new, fresh voice to bluegrass by winning over lots of new fans. Heather’s voice is silky smooth and sweet and To A Dove is a beautiful mixture of traditional bluegrass and old-time music. From the very first tune - You Will Be A Flower - to the last song, you will be amazed how this young lady’s voice shows experience at grabbing your ear to the lyrics of the song. The entire project is a delightful musical experience. To A Dove is the title track and my favorite cut and it’s a beautiful song performed to perfection with the autoharp adding an airy quality. Perrrrfect! BMP
